Happy Camper is a diner and bar in Chicago known for its great food. The firm was tasked to plan and build its first store in Denver. The new store will be in an existing building, so it needed a renovation. The building was in the back of the lot, and the way the parking was set up did not take advantage of the fact that it was on a busy corner.

The building makes a clear street edge on the corner lot by organizing the programs around the inner courtyard space. It is made of hand-made brick, walnut, plaster, and glass—all simple, elegant elements. The house faces the inner courtyard and pool, connecting to nature by looking up.

In the featured project, the owners came up with the idea for the piece while trying to figure out the best way to use the site. The home’s style is influenced by mid-century modern, but it also has a more eclectic interior design style. The house is mostly warm, champagne-colored brick, with a few spots of chocolate-colored terra cotta covering to make it stand out. In addition to these choices, a bourbon-painted structural steel soffit was added to connect the wide eaves into a single expression.
